Another Day... More Information
Application of Informational Edge (Mosaic Theory)
A clean print, a messy tape and the internals are quietly changing
Today’s CPI was one of those sessions where the data was “fine,” but the market reaction was anything but clean.
Headline CPI landed as expected. Core was a touch soft. Supercore was a touch hot. Net-net… Nothing that should have been a regime shift on its own. And yet the session was tricky, bonds initially rallied, then quickly gave it back; equities found a bid, then started to roll over. Layer in the constant political and geopolitical noise, and it was the kind of day where price action felt more like positioning and narrative churn than “pure macro.”
What matters to me is not the first 15 minutes after the release. It’s what the market is slowly admitting underneath the surface:
My internal inflation proxy is flashing a near-term tailwind to higher inflation (not a 2022-style impulse, but a meaningful “stickier than comfortable” push).
The rates curve is compressing in a way that suggests fewer cuts and a higher growth tax if policy stays tight.
And the mosaic internals are rotating: defensives are stabilising, value is beating growth, quality continues to separate from junk, and breadth is showing early signs of narrowing again.
If you only look at SPX and the headline CPI number, today reads like a non-event. If you look at what’s moving beneath the index, it looks more like the market is re-pricing the path, not the destination.
The clean takeaway from today is not “inflation is back” or “cuts are dead.”
It’s that the market is increasingly being forced into a trade-off: to keep inflation contained, policy has to stay restrictive for longer but that tightening pressure doesn’t show up immediately in CPI. It shows up later, through slower growth and narrower breadth.

The curve compression we’re seeing is a quiet version of that story. And the internals are starting to align with it.
Below I’ll walk through:
How I’m interpreting the CPI mix (headline/core/supercore) versus the tape,
What the curve compression is telling me about the 2026 path and the growth “tax,” and
What the internals are signalling about leadership and breadth from here.
Buckle up…. pleanty happening
