Politics and Financing Teshape The Investment Cycle

The most consequential development this week is that the investment expansion underpinning US exceptionalism has acquired a more demanding political and financial test. Voters have changed the composition of Congress and challenged the local economics of data centres. Investors are asking harder questions about the returns on the next dollar of AI spending. Central banks, meanwhile, are still dealing with inflation generated by an economy whose strongest pockets have continued to compete for scarce resources. My read is that these developments belong in the same macro argument: the conditions required to sustain the current expansion are becoming harder to satisfy.

That helps explain why the market could initially welcome the election result and then sell technology so aggressively. Thursday’s S&P 500 decline of 4.4%, Nasdaq fall of 5.5% and semiconductor slide of about 12.2% were accompanied by a Treasury rally. Through Thursday, the S&P was down 3% for the week and the Nasdaq 4.4%. The size of the daily reversal matters, but so does its composition. Investors were reducing exposure to the anticipated investment cycle while accepting lower yields on government debt.

The question for macro is how far that adjustment travels. A lower expected rate of investment growth can reduce the need for additional monetary tightening before the economy contracts. It can also threaten the earnings assumptions behind equity valuations while leaving current inflation uncomfortable. This creates room for duration and relative performance trades, but the case depends on identifying which part of growth is changing and which risks remain in the price.

Below, I connect this week’s politics, AI investment and central-bank decisions to what’s priced and where I’d actually want risk on.

That’s where I’m taking GMM: economy to market pricing to trade ideas, with the research, tools and conversation built around that process.
